Background
At the time of the research, more than a million people aged 50 to State Pension Age were claiming incapacity benefits. Poor health and disability were the two most significant barriers to employment among older people. The i~work consortium brought together academic and practitioner experts in order to address these issues.
Aims and objectives
The i~work consortium worked together intensively to bridge disciplinary boundaries and evolve a shared research agenda. They undertook a consultation exercise to engage appropriate stakeholders in order to guide the development of the Collaborative Research Proposal and to develop a ground-breaking, integrated approach to the challenge of achieving longer, healthier working lives.
The network was underpinned by two overarching frameworks, that of Inclusive Design and of Workability. Inclusive Design allows the investigation of the specific needs and preferences of older workers, whilst providing better workplace solutions for all ages. Core partners include the University of Warwick, the Health and Safety Laboratory, the Royal College of Art, the University of Nottingham, the University of Surrey, the International Longevity Centre-UK and the University of Cambridge.
